The aEEG is used to record abnormal brain activity that
would be unlikely captured with a 20-minute office based
EEG recording. If abnormal activity occurs intermittently or
at specific times of day, the aEEG wilt be able to catch and
record those events. Ambulatory EEGs can also be used to
rule out or confirm Epilepsy when the seizures persist
despite the use of several drugs.
HOW DOI PREPARE FOR IT?
- Wash your hair the night before or day of the test, but do not
use any conditioners, hair creams, sprays or styling gels.
® Wear a front opening shirt.
- Take usual medications unless instructed by a physician,
- Have a list of medications with you.
HOW IS THE TEST PERFORMED?
You’ll feel little or no discomfort during a aEEG as the electrodes
will not transmit any sensations. They only record your brain waves.
Here are some things you can expect to happen during an aEEG:
- A technician measures your head and marks your scalp with a
special pencil, to indicate where to attach the electrodes. Those
spots on your scalp may be scrubbed with a gritty cream to
improve the quality of the recording. - A technician attaches flat metal discs (electrodes) to your scalp
using a special adhesive. Sometimes, an elastic cap fitted with
electrodes is used instead. The electrodes are connected with
wires to an instrument that amplifies the brain waves and
records them on computer equipment.
HOW DOI KNOW MY RESULTS?
After the technician removes the electrodes, your research will be
downloaded to our secure server and read by a board-certified
Neurologist trained in EEG/Epilepsy. The results are usually
available within 2 weeks of the test being completed. The findings
will be communicated to the doctor who ordered the study.
